Good Eats: Le Pub St. Germain
A few steps from Métro Odeon, where you find yourself near a Starbucks, numerous movie theatres and crazy activity involving students from the Sorbonne, is a restaurant that is one of those where no matter what time of day it is, you can stop in and get a meal that is going to make everyone in your party happy–which is an important determinant when you are traveling with a group . Have been there and done that.
Pub St. Germain is a large (in Paris terms) space that is three floors of funkiness. The bar area you see here is reminiscent of British colonial decor (my favorite theme) where you can relax in over-stuffed chairs while sipping on an equally large drink in the middle of the madness of the 6th arr. that takes place right outside the door. And I love that they just let you sit there no matter what you’ve ordered. In the states they would want your rear out of there the minute you took your last sip. But, let’s not forget, we are in Paris!!
Upstairs is equally funky, but now we find ourselves in China or Morocco, I am not sure which. Here is where they lead you if you want a meal and the great thing about this space, if you do have a larger group, they can accommodate you up here. That’s not the case in many restaurants in Paris. Those tiny, romantic cafés that we equate with this city don’t lend themselves user friendly to families or groups larger than five. Not only will they be able to seat you here, the menu is such that everyone from the person who refuses to go outside their food box and try new and delightful things will be able to get a hamburger and fries, while those more adventurous souls can feast on well prepared goodies that are more international in flavor. Whenever we are in Paris, this is a stop for my family. It is one of those tried and true places where we don’t have to think or worry about whether we are going to get a good meal or not. It is all good!
