Coupe du Monde de Rugby
I recently mention in my theme day blog that I was a fair weather fan of football and American football, stating that if France was playing in the World Cup, or the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Superbowl, then I became interested like everyone else. So! You can imagine how interested I am in rugby!
The World Cup of Rugby being played here in Paris from the 7th of September until the 20th of October is a little hard to avoid. The only thing I know about rugby is it’s considered a tougher sport than the other two because anything goes! (I’m sure guys, and perhaps girls, out there will correct me if I’m wrong!)
Twelve matches will be played in Paris either at Le Parc des Princes in the 16e or at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis (a northern suburb of Paris). The first match today will be between France and Argentina at Saint-Denis. Tomorrow the US vs. England get their shot, as well as Australia against Japan, but none of these games will be played in the City of Lights.
Speaking of lights, the Lady of Paris, none other than the Eiffel Tower, is now displaying the rugby colors; a gigantic screen in the square of the Hôtel de Ville will be transmitting the games for anyone to see, and the Jardins du Trocadéro will become Rugby Town, the official village for fans, to name a few of the activities going on. For more information or to purchase tickets, you can visit the official website. I for one, if you don’t mind, will skip the games and do some serious Fall shopping instead!

I have to agree with your shopping choice rather then take in a few rubgy matches. The rest of my family on the other hand, would give there right arm to be in France right now… they are HUGE rugby fans!

Mal, I’m not sure if some French supporters will agree, but you’re right, most rugby fans, including those rooting for France, will find this funny!

I walked by the square of the Hotel de Ville earlier this evening. Fans were congregating, there was lots of singing going on, and the big screen was showing highights of other sporting events. One young man I talked with said it was going to get crazy there before the night was over.
I’m not a rugby fan, but the enthusiasm and zeal for life was infectious!

I wondered why all the hotel rooms were booked when I planned my trip starting next Saturday! It may make for interesting scenery, in any case. I’ll be shopping and reveling in the people watching as well. Any good suggestions?

Christine, where do I begin?! I have a number of suggestions, but is this your first trip to Paris? If it is, I suggest maybe reading my “Best of Paris” post, “My Top 10 Vantage Points To View Paris“, and “10 Street Markets“.
If it’s shopping you’re after, I would suggest reading my “Free Fashion Show” article that takes place every Friday at the Galeries Lafayette, and the one about “Le Bon Marche“! That would be a start!!!
