Francis Lai - Move Over!

by Lynn on August 29th, 2007

Recording SessionI spent an interesting afternoon with Martin Boumendil watching him work his keyboards and other instruments in an orchestration of sound, as images on a screen coordinated and blended the visual with the audio. It was quite fascinating to say the least! Martin is a young musician and composer with a nice melodic voice who also has that gift of imagination and creativity and doesn’t put himself into any one genre of music. Instead the versatility of his compositions is what I found to be most interesting.

The Best of Francis LaiIs it any wonder that Martin would be drawn to the film industry as a composer since both his parents and his aunt all work in the film industry in one capacity or another as a cinematographer, assistant director, and film editor. (I also wrote a post about his cousin Antoine Daguin.) I asked Martin if forming a group was not something he would consider, since most of his time is spent composing musical scores, but he did imply that he gets together with friends and jams on a regular basis.

John Williams and Steven SpielbergAs John Williams and Francis Lai, both born in 1932, begin to see the years waning, how can we forget such memorable scores by both these men who have dominated films for decades? The lists are too long to mention by both men, but Jaws, Star Wars, and Shindler’s List by Williams and A Man and A Woman, Love Story and Les Misérables by Lai, are just a few of their unforgettable compositions.

Perhaps one day we’ll be going over the long list left by Martin Boumendil. I for one would not be surprised, he’s still a teenager and he’s already impressed a number of people with his music! Track 1 & 3 are extracts from his work. Track 2 is a sample of his mellow voice. Enjoy!
