The Paris Traveler

I’m Back!

by Lynn on April 24th, 2007

Mom and I in MontmartreHow wonderful and fortunate I have been to be able to show my mother around Paris and to introduce her to friends I have known for decades! The last time my mother was in this fabulous city was in 1978! Many things have changed over the years to say the least, but most of all Mom’s attitude. Back then she just wanted me to “come home”. She didn’t realize at the time that Paris was “my home”.

Musicians Playing at Place des VogesWell, Mom has fallen in love with Paris this time around, and she now understands why I’ve loved this city since the first day I arrived over 35 years ago. We once again did the touristy thing of visiting many of the “must see” places in this beautiful city, but mostly we hung out with friends at their homes, shopped in the marketplaces and little boutiques, listened to terrific jazz played by street musicians in the squares, and went to some quaint and not so quaint restaurants and cafés. (More about those places later!)

I even took Mom to see the film, La Môme on the Champs Elysées one afternoon. Mom does not speak a word of French, but knowing the main details of Edith Piaf’s life was a big help and she followed the movie without any problems. As a matter of fact, it was one of the few times that Mom did not fall asleep in the middle of a film! That says a lot!

So, I hope you will join me here regularly at The Paris Traveler and perhaps fall under the magical spell of this enchanting city! Just a little footnote, Mom, who will soon be 85, has decided to take French lessons! She says next time she goes to France she wants to know what everyone is saying!

Thanks Mary Jo, Paris is forever changing, yet somehow manages to stay the same. (I know, it’s very paradoxical to say, but it’s true!)

I look forward to letting everyone know what’s going on in this great city!
