Paris Cocktails

 Once again, we here on the Travel Channel at b5media are participating in a “channel” post if you will.  Our guy out in DC, Jon, The DC Traveler, invited all of us to participate in World Cocktail Week, ” established to celebrate the rich history of the cocktail and recognize the craftsmanship and skill of the bartenders who have been mixing them for over 200 years”.  I say Amen to that!  This week, May 8th-13th, is your chance to visit your local watering hole and raise your glass to the men and women standing behind the bar, making sure glasses are never empty and taxis are waiting for you outside the door.

Jon suggested that we make up “cocktails” (all very tongue in cheek) honoring the particular city that we blog about.  During this week, you can visit other “Travelers” to see what concoctions their city might conjure up.   

 First, I thought I would get us started with a real cocktail to get the ball rolling.  I chose to provide one using Cointreau for several reasons.  One:  it’s yummy! Two: it’s made in France. Three:  My daughter Lindsay lived with a member of the Cointreau clan during her year in Angers so they are practically family.  Plus they are sponsors of the event, so go them.

 The cocktail I chose is the Sidecar, again in honor of Lindsay.  We were having lunch one day at RL in Chicago (Ralph Lauren’s restaurant) and  this particular drink was featured on their menu.  None of us knew what exactly the ingredients were but it sounded so darn sophisticated that we needed to find out.  Well, Lindsay, honey, this Sidecar is for you!

  •  1 oz Cointreau, 1/2 oz lemon juice, 2 oz Remy Martin VSOP Cognac   Shake with ice.  Strain into a chilled sugar rimmed Martini glass. 

With drink in hand, I now serve up “Paris Cocktails”: 

  •  The Sarkozy:  1 part insolence, 3 parts marriages, a generous dash of self-destruction.  Shake vigorously and make sure the media is around.                                                                                               

A bit harsh perhaps, but lately, he hasn’t been making too many friends.  

  •  The Paris Problem Solver :  1 part raised eyebrows, 2 parts pursed lips, a splash of shrugged shoulders.  Strain and pour into a glass marked “C’est impossible!”

  A tiny aside:   This is the second time that Jon has initiated a team blog and we love him for it.  The first time was to celebrate National Tavern Day a few weeks ago.  I don’t know Jon personally, but I am sensing a trend here and think he’s someone we’d want to hang with.  Cheers!
