Rodin Museum

by Lynn on October 23rd, 2007

Musée RodinThis is one of my favorite museums in Paris, not surprising since Rodin is one of my favorite sculptors. I, also, love the work by Rodin’s student, lover, model, and inspiration, Camille Claudel, but unfortunately, unless you can wait until next year, her work will be on loan in Madrid until mid-January. (Which reminds me, if you’ve never seen the movie Camille Claudelwith Isabelle Adjani and Gérard Depardieu, it is a must see film!)

Le PenseurLe BaiserThe harmony between the museum itself and the garden makes this museum rather unique, where some of Rodins most famous sculptures are on display. Looking at The Kiss is like invading the privacy of a couple actually in an embrace. In the garden, you are greeted by the Gates of Hell and you can just see the wheels turning in the mind of The Thinker. There’s even a rose named after the famous artist, la Rose Rodin.

La Rose RodinThere are a number of exhibits and lectures that also take place at the museum besides the permanent collection, such as Sacha Guitry: Une Vie d’Artiste in association with the Cinémathèque Française at the museum right now. For more information, visit their website.

One of mine too! I’m lucky enough to have a Rodiin Museum close by in Philladelphia and numerous pieces at the National Gallery of Art here in Washington, DC.

And is there a better photo op then sitting and comtemplating next to The Thinker?

You’re right Jon! I think just about everyone who has seen The Thinker has that very photo right next to it, pondering the universe! Or at least, trying to look like they’re in deep thought! Lol.

Thanks for the great article. The Musee Rodin in one of my favorite places to visit in Paris. My favorite hotel is a 2 minute walk away. It’s always 1 of my 5 must see/dos whenever I’m lucky enough to be in Paris. Rodin is actually a favorite of my mother’s (her favorite piece: The Gates of Hell). She first took me to this beautiful museum when I was 13-I’ve been a fan ever since. Whenever she’s with me, we visit the museum together. Can’t wait to return! Hopefully Claudel’s works will be back by then.

How wonderful to be introduced so young to the arts and beauty of Paris!

I went to the Rodin Museum while I was in Paris, and absolutely loved it!

The pieces were marvelous — and the setting, including the lovely grounds, were a beautiful showcase for the work. It was a nice day when I was there, and I enjoyed spending time outdoors, wandering among the pieces in the garden.

And on top of all that, you got to see Camille Claudel’s work as well!
