Playing with Travel Photos – Eiffel Tower

This is a guest post from Mary Jo Manzanares, Travel & Culture Channel Editor and blogger at Flyaway Cafe.

Playing with photo editing software today – always a fun thing to do with travel photos.
I like making the Eiffel Tower even more artistic looking that it really is!

Eiffel Elves

The Eiffel Tower workers are at it night and day getting ready for their new lighting arrangement. This view was taken at 1:45am.  At last check, only 5 of the 27 stars were up.

EU + Eiffel = Blue

EU + Eiffel = Blue

No, we’re not back in high school algebra trying to solve for X.  If we were, I would be running as fast and far away as I could.
Starting June 30th, the Eiffel tower is going to be lit up in blue to celebrate the six month presidency of the European Union.  The EU, consisting of 27 European nations was created in 1993 to develop a single market through standardized laws that apply to all member states.  Hoping to ease passage between boarders, the system works towards creating movement of people, goods and services from one nation to another with …read more

E.T.

E.T.

This is an image from a webcam–Paris-live.com, that I came across when I turned my computer on the other night.  I go to this page at least twice a day to see what’s happening and never has it looked like this.  I did nothing to alter the image other than crop it a smidge. It looks a bit extraterrestrial-ish with “two” red eyes (there should only be one).  Hopefully it was the camera shaking that much and not the Eiffel Tower!

This one I boosted the color just a tiny bit.  The sun was setting and the lights were just coming …read more

Paris Haiku: Part Deux

Paris Haiku: Part Deux

It has been brought to my attention that not just anyone would lie in bed, worrying about life’s little odds and ends and come up with something like “Paris Haiku” for a post.  ”Just how exactly does your mind work?” I was asked and if I had the answer I might pursue being more normal.  Except, that would be no fun.  I LOVE the swirly, weird thoughts (for the most part) that come up for me.  Actually, that IS my normal and I would have it no other way. I found a quote today about coming up with ideas from …read more

Say It Isn’t So

Say It Isn’t So

Looks weird, doesn’t it?  A space age Eiffel Tower?  Well, yes and no.  This is the winning entry submitted by the French architecture firm, Serero, that will be restructuring the observation deck on the tower’s third level in celebration of its 120th anniversary next year.

The addition will not require any permanent modification of the tower (thank God), but will double the capacity of the observation deck to better accomodate the more than 7 million visitors estimated to visit it.  The addition will be cantilevered, similar to how a wing is attached to a plane with a lightweight carbon fiber type …read more

Paris Photo Pharie

Paris Photo Pharie

Magnificent, over-the-top gorgeous!  What do you think I am talking about?  It could be a million things the way my mind works but specifically, I am talking about today in Paris.  Sunny, warm, not a cloud in the sky and everyone out and about enjoying every second of it.

All these people lounging about were actually eating picnic lunches, sleeping in the sun, having birthday parties, kissing to the point of needing to get a room and while they were all doing very different things, they were all doing the same thing……

A Few Observations As I Get Started

A Few Observations As I Get Started

Oodles of things are being revealed to me as I make my way through the streets of Paris looking at it through different eyes this trip–the eyes of a blogger having to write about what she sees on the the streets of Paris.

For one thing, I realize that I am very uncomfortable taking pictures of what I see around me.  I feel like a tourist which isn’t how I see myself when I am here.  And, I realize I suck at taking pictures because I never do it.  I received my first camera for Christmas and clearly, should have been practicing at …read more

Small But Mighty

Small But Mighty

Europe has had the idea that more compact (as in cars) can be a good thing.  Epecially when you live in a big city and parking is a constant headache like it is in Paris.  I remember seeing my first Smart car in th mid-90’s and was baffled that someone would want to drive something so tiny.  Back then I was sporting a huge van with the obligatory 4 captains chairs, cup holders and plenty of leg room for family road trips.  Why something so tiny?  The answer was simple:

They fit anywhere.  The tiniest of curbside real estate left between …read more

Up, Up and Away: Part Deux

Up, Up and Away: Part Deux

Ok, hopefully, you have found a reasonably priced flight to get you to Paris.  Now, where does one hang up one’s hat once they arrive?  I see you having two options:  1.  Staying in a hotel or 2. Renting a vacation apartment.

I am sure all of you are familiar with staying in hotels, but may not be familiar with staying in European hotels.  Just like anything, how much you spend determines what you get.  My experience has run the gamut from two to five star establishments.  2-stars should get you a clean room, perhaps a folding chair and fairly …read more
