The Paris Traveler

Up, Up and Away

by Kim on January 21st, 2008

Over the weekend, I worked on booking my next trip to Paris which will be in mid-February.  My last visit was in November and before that May, so it is quickly becoming second nature for me to be going back and forth–Yeah!  If you have never done it, here are some thoughts and sites to get you started.

Air France WelcomeI usually fly Air France.  It is a weird thing with me, but I enjoy flying the airline of the country that I am visiting.  Hearing everyone on the plane speaking French gets my trip started right out of the gate–literally.  They provide great service, wonderful food and entertainment that until only recently I have been taking advantage of.   From O’Hare, you leave around 5:30p.m. so you get a dinner, watch a few good movies (both in French and English), sleep for a bit if you are one of those lucky ones who can–I am not, perhaps read for awhile, get”woken” up for breakfast and then anxiously await touch down.  I say anxiously because:  1.  I can’t wait to get there and 2. I hate landings.  I also think (could be wrong) that by flying the airline of France, Italy, whatever, you get preferential treatment at their arrival airport.  Many times, your plane is out in the middle of nowhere on a tarmac and all passengers have to de-plane onto a bus and you are driven to the terminal.   After eight and a half hours in the air, I just want to get off at a gate.

If you are looking for reasonably priced flights, go to Kayak.com.  They search the entire internet and come up with a list from least to most expensive.  Cheaper fares than Air France came up, but not by much.  To fly direct with no connections is worth the extra I might have to pay.  One take off and landing is plenty for me.

From now until March 1, you can still find some pretty decent fares, as it is still low season.  After that, things will go up as spring break time kicks in which makes it busier and harder to find a deal.

Look for part 2 of this post for ideas on where to stay!
